Currently, access to the upper levels of the Hanging Temple is restricted due to preservation and safety considerations. However, visitors can still enjoy a complete view of this remarkable cliffside temple from the viewing area below and appreciate its unique architectural design and breathtaking location. The exterior view itself offers excellent photo opportunities and allows you to fully admire how the temple is built into the mountainside.
Photography without flash is allowed in most outdoor areas of Yungang Grottoes. Some caves restrict photography to protect the pigments — your guide will point out where photos are permitted and where they are not.
Datong sits at higher elevation and can be cool even in summer. Bring layers — a light jacket in spring/autumn and a warm coat in winter. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for the grottoes and temple stairways.
