Dujiangyan Panda Base is a research and breeding center where you can see giant pandas of all ages — from playful cubs to adults — in spacious, naturalistic enclosures. It is generally less crowded than the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, so you get a more relaxed viewing experience with better photo opportunities.
The drive from central Chengdu to Dujiangyan takes about 1 to 1.5 hours by private car, depending on traffic. Your guide picks you up from your hotel lobby in the morning. High-speed rail is also an option (around 30 minutes), but we use private vehicles for flexibility and door-to-door convenience.
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is larger and closer to downtown, but often crowded with tour groups. Dujiangyan Panda Base (also called the China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Pandas) is about 1.5 hours from Chengdu, less visited, and set in a more natural mountain environment. You can get closer to the pandas and enjoy a quieter, more relaxed experience.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential — you will walk on stone paths at the Dujiangyan Irrigation System and paved walkways at the Panda Base. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. In summer, a light rain jacket is useful as Dujiangyan is near the mountains and weather can change quickly.
Yes, photography is allowed at Zhongshuge Bookstore, and it is one of the most photogenic bookstores in China. The mirrored ceilings and symmetrical bookshelves create stunning visual effects. Just be mindful of other visitors and keep your flash off to maintain the peaceful atmosphere.
