11 Days Yunnan China Tour: Dali, Lijiang & Shangri-La Adventure

Arrive in Dali and meet your local guide at the designated meeting point. Transfer to your hotel in or near Dali Ancient Town. After settling in, take a leisurely stroll through the ancient town's cobblestone streets, browsing Bai minority shops and cafes. Enjoy a welcome dinner featuring Yunnan cuisine. The evening is free to rest and acclimatize to the altitude (2,000m).

Ride the Gantong Cable Car up Cangshan Mountain's western slope, soaring above forested ridges with panoramic views of Erhai Lake below. Hike along the Cloud Traveler's Path, a scenic cliff-side trail. Descend and visit the iconic Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple, Dali's most photographed landmark dating back over 1,000 years. Return to Dali Ancient Town for the evening, free to explore at your own pace.

Drive along the western shore of Erhai Lake, stopping at scenic viewpoints for photos of the vast blue lake framed by mountains. Visit Xizhou Ancient Town, a well-preserved Bai settlement famous for its traditional courtyard architecture and local snacks. In Zhoucheng village, learn the ancient indigo tie-dye technique from Bai artisans and create your own textile masterpiece. Return to Dali in the late afternoon.

Take a high-speed train from Dali to Lijiang (approximately 2 hours), enjoying the changing landscapes of Yunnan through the window. Upon arrival, visit Black Dragon Pool Park, where the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is perfectly reflected in the still waters on clear days. Walk through Lijiang Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Naxi minority culture, canals, and traditional wooden architecture. Check into your hotel.

Ascend Jade Dragon Snow Mountain via cable car to the glacier park at 4,506m, standing among clouds and snow-capped peaks. Descend to Blue Moon Valley, where glacial meltwater creates stunning turquoise pools against white limestone terraces. Visit Baisha Ancient Village, the original Naxi settlement, to see traditional murals and silverwork. End the day in Shuhe Ancient Town, a quieter alternative to Lijiang with charming teahouses.

Drive to the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the world's deepest river canyons. Begin the hike along the famous high trail, ascending the legendary 28 Bends switchbacks with the roaring Jinsha River far below. The trail cuts across dramatic cliff faces with the snow-capped Haba and Jade Dragon mountains as your backdrop. Overnight at a guesthouse along the trail, enjoying the raw power of the gorge at sunset.

Continue the Tiger Leaping Gorge hike to Longdong Waterfall, a hidden cascade tucked into the canyon walls. Pass through the Middle Gorge section where the river narrows dramatically. After completing the trek, drive north to Shangri-La (3,200m), the heart of Tibetan culture in Yunnan. Check into your hotel and explore Dukezong Ancient Town, one of the best-preserved Tibetan settlements, with its giant prayer wheel and stone-paved lanes.

Visit Ganden Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan, often called the "Little Potala Palace." Watch monks in debate and explore the golden assembly halls. Drive to Napa Lake, a seasonal wetland where Tibetan herders graze yaks against a backdrop of snow mountains. Afternoon at Pudacuo National Park, China's first national park, with pristine lakes, old-growth forests, and rare wildlife.

Early departure for one of the most spectacular driving days in Yunnan. Stop at the First Bend of the Yangtze River for a sweeping panorama. Cross the Baima Snow Mountain Pass (4,300m), the highest point on the route, with prayer flags fluttering in the alpine wind. Arrive at Feilai Temple, the best viewpoint for Meili Snow Mountain. Check into your guesthouse and wait for tomorrow's sunrise.

Rise before dawn for the Meili Snow Mountain sunrise, when the first light ignites Kawagebo (6,740m), Yunnan's highest peak and a sacred mountain in Tibetan Buddhism, in brilliant gold. After breakfast, drive to Mingyong Glacier, one of the lowest-altitude glaciers in the world, descending from Kawagebo through primeval forest. Hike through the glacier valley with prayer flags and ancient trees. Return via Mingyong Village for a traditional Tibetan lunch.

After breakfast, transfer to Diqing Shangri-La Airport for your departure flight. If your flight is later in the day, enjoy a final morning walk through Dukezong Ancient Town or visit a local Tibetan family for a cultural farewell.
