Your guide leads you along Ming-Qing Street, the empire's Wall Street where the country's first draft bank, Rishengchang, once handled millions of silver taels. We climb the 600-year-old City Walls for panoramic views over 3,700 courtyard homes, then explore the Confucius Temple — the only surviving Yuan Dynasty Confucian hall in China — and the Armed Escort Museum where you learn how silver caravans were protected across bandit country. The ancient city wall is about 6km long, and walking the full loop takes about 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace. Inside the walls, the main streets are pedestrian-only — our guide takes you through the most interesting lanes and courtyards, which adds another 2-3 hours.
Zhangbi is a 1,600-year-old underground military fortress beneath a seemingly ordinary village. It has 10km of tunnels, barracks, and escape routes built during the Northern Wei dynasty. Very few tourists visit — our guide explains the engineering and military strategy behind this hidden marvel.
