Wolong is the original and most important giant panda research center in China, set in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at 2,000m elevation. Unlike urban panda bases, Wolong offers a true mountain wilderness experience — pandas live in large semi-natural enclosures surrounded by bamboo forest. You also get to hike the Panda Ping Trail, where wild pandas are known to roam.

How difficult is the Panda Ping Hiking Trail?

The Panda Ping Trail is rated moderate — it involves steady uphill walking on a well-maintained mountain path through bamboo forest, typically taking 1-1.5 hours. You need a basic level of fitness and sturdy shoes. Your guide sets the pace and there are rest points along the way. Not suitable for wheelchair users or those with serious mobility limitations.

How far is Wolong from Chengdu?

Wolong is about 130 kilometers west of Chengdu. The drive takes around 2.5 to 3 hours each way, passing through scenic mountain roads. We pick you up from your Chengdu hotel early in the morning and have you back in the city by early evening.

Is Wolong Panda Base suitable for children?

Yes, Wolong is great for families. The panda viewing areas are easy to walk around, and kids love watching the cubs play. The Panda Ping Hiking Trail is gentle enough for children who can walk a few kilometers. Just keep in mind the elevation is around 2,000 meters, so younger children may need a bit more time to adjust.

What should I bring for the hiking portion?

Comfortable walking shoes are essential, along with a light jacket since mountain weather can change quickly. Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection.
