It takes around 1–1.5 hours by private car under normal traffic conditions. On weekends, holidays and morning/evening rush hours, congestion is common, so reserve 1.5-2 hours for the trip.
Free entry to the ancient town’s main streets, canals and bridges for casual walking. Separate tickets are required if you plan to visit paid scenic spots inside: old manors, art museums and handcraft exhibition halls. Rowing boat rides on the river are also charged separately.
Famous local delicacies spread along the riverside streets: pork rice dumplings (zongzi), pan-fried rice cakes, osmanthus cake, freshwater eel noodles and fermented glutinous rice wine.
Departure suggestion: Leave downtown Shanghai before 9:30 AM on weekends/holidays to bypass highway traffic jams and crowded parking lots. If you prefer quieter scenery, start your return drive after 16:30, when most tourist groups leave the town.
