Navigation tip: Google Maps works for broad directions in Beijing, but it may lack up-to-date local details — especially inside shopping malls, subway station exits, and newer areas. Amap (Gaode) is more reliable for turn-by-turn walking and driving directions inside China. Download both before arrival and use Amap as your primary.
Translation tip: Google Translate’s camera feature is excellent for scanning menus and street signs, but it requires a VPN to work in China. Youdao Dictionary works without a VPN and is great for looking up specific words or phrases. Download both — use Google Translate when you have VPN, Youdao as backup.

What Happens If You Overstay Your Beijing Visa-Free Transit?
Overstaying the 240-hour limit or traveling outside the permitted area (Beijing municipality) without authorization results in illegal stay penalties, which can include:
Fines (RMB 500-5,000)
Detention for questioning
A ban on re-entering China for 1-5 years
Negative impact on future Chinese visa applications
If you have an urgent, legitimate reason to extend your stay (medical emergency, flight cancellation), you must apply for a stay permit extension at the local public security bureau’s entry-exit administration department before your 240 hours expire. No extensions are granted under the standard policy without extraordinary circumstances.
Good to Know: Set a phone alarm for 4 hours before your onward flight departure. Leave the city center 2 hours before that. Beijing traffic can be unpredictable, especially during rush hours (7-9am and 5-7pm). If you miss your onward flight, you are responsible for rebooking — the airline may not honor a “visa-free transit” missed connection.
