Jiuzhaigou Tours — 108 Turquoise Lakes

Calcium-clear lakes, mirror waterfalls and Tibetan villages in a northern Sichuan valley, with 2027 tickets, rail times and fares checked before you go.

Why Visit Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaigou at a Glance

Jiuzhaigou - the Nine Villages - is a glacial valley system in northern Sichuan where water does the impossible: lakes of indigo, turquoise and cream in which drowned forests lie intact, and waterfalls fanning wide over mossy stone. A Y of three valleys - Shuzheng, Rize and Zechawa - runs some fifty kilometres through larch and fir, stitched together by a hop-on sightseeing bus and boardwalks. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is built to be walked slowly and photographed at dawn, when the lakes hold still. Most travellers give it two unhurried days, add Huanglong's terraced pools, and base themselves in Zhangzha Town just outside the gate, reached from Chengdu on the new high-speed rail.

Trip Basics

6 facts
Best TimeMid-October brings peak colour, gold larches mirrored in still water. September to early November is driest; July-August is rainy, humid and crowded.
Getting ThereHigh-speed rail runs Chengdu East to Huanglong-Jiuzhaigou station, then a 92km shuttle (~2h). A ~1h flight to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport also works.
How Many DaysTwo full days suit the three valleys at an easy pace; one is rushed. Allow three days if adding Huanglong, plus a travel day each side from Chengdu.
Tickets & ShuttlePeak (Apr 1-Nov 15) is ¥190 entry plus ¥90 sightseeing bus = ¥280; Real-name timed tickets are capped near 41,000/day and sell out days ahead.
AltitudeThe valley climbs from about 2,000m at the gate to 3,100m at Long Lake. Most hotels sit near 2,400m, so expect mild breathlessness and walk slowly.
Where to StayNo lodging is allowed inside the park. Zhangzha Town at the eastern gate has the best hotels and food street; Changhai village is cheaper and quieter.

Top 12 Things to Do in Jiuzhaigou

01

Five Flower Lake

Five Flower Lake is the postcard of Jiuzhaigou and the most photographed water in China. Submerged spruce and fir trunks lie preserved under calcium-clear shallows so boats seem to hang in mid-air, while minerals and algae paint the surface in indigo, turquoise, emerald, amber and cream. Colour peaks in still air before 9am, when the lake holds like glass. Boardwalks ring it on the Rize-valley bus line; give half an hour and come early, when the light is low and the crowds still thin.

02

Nuorilang Waterfall

Nuorilang is Jiuzhaigou's broadest waterfall, a curtain of shallow water fanning over a mossy, calcium-encrusted ledge, its Tibetan name meaning a playground for the gods. Spray catches the sun most mornings and throws small rainbows, and a boardwalk passes directly behind the falling water at its lower end. It sits at the junction of the three valleys, and the walk between it and nearby Mirror Lake is easy. Fifteen to twenty minutes covers it well.

03

Long Lake

Long Lake is the largest and highest of Jiuzhaigou's lakes, a long ribbon of cobalt water at 3,100 metres backed by snowline peaks, and the source of all the park's waterfalls. Most riders take the bus to the top terminus, spend a cool, breezy half-hour at the shore, then work down through the forest toward Five Coloured Pool. The altitude bites here, so move slowly and carry a warm layer even in July. Allow an hour of strolling before you catch the next bus down.

04

Five Coloured Pool

Five Coloured Pool, high in the quiet Zechawa valley, is the smallest stop on the circuit and arguably the most intensely coloured: a shallow mineral spring whose bottom glows in hard-edged bands of cobalt, teal, gold and rust through water so clear the floor reads like a painted tile. Sunlight is best around midday, when it finally reaches down between the firs. Because only a fraction of visitors ride this far, you often get it almost to yourself; ten minutes is enough, but linger.

05

Pearl Shoal Waterfall

Pearl Shoal is a wide crescent of water breaking over a submerged lime shelf into hundreds of beads that scatter and roll down a sloping fan, an effect that made it a famous frame in the 1986 TV version of Journey to the West. It marks the lower end of the Rize valley, a short walk from Mirror Lake, linked by bus or an easy downhill stroll. Morning side-light turns the droplets gold; give it fifteen to twenty minutes.

06

Shuzheng Lakes & Waterfall

The Shuzheng valley opens with a chain of nineteen stepped lakes tumbling into one another, capped by Shuzheng Waterfall, a tangle of white water braided through fallen logs that you pass behind on a walkway. Because Shuzheng and Rize branch at Nuorilang, many travellers save Shuzheng for the return leg, when the light softens and the buses empty. Allow an hour to walk the falls and two lakes properly.

Your Questions, Answered

Jiuzhaigou Travel FAQ

Book the real-name timed ticket and your rail seat well ahead, set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly, and expect simple food and cooler evenings at altitude. Two early mornings in different valleys beat one long middle-of-the-day slog.

What is there to do in Jiuzhaigou at night?

Keep expectations realistic: at altitude the evenings are cold and short, and there is no real nightlife to speak of. Most visitors do it one night and are glad. After that it is early nights, board-game evenings in hotel lobbies, or simply turning in early to catch the first light on the lakes - which is, after all, why you came.

Are there cultural experiences beyond the lakes?

Yes, and they deepen the trip. Nearby the old Tibetan-Qiang town of Songpan offers hillside streets, ancient watchtowers and monastery visits, and there are working monasteries around the region. Weaving even half a day of this human texture in beside the water turns a scenery stop into a fuller western-Sichuan journey.

Is Jiuzhaigou a good trip for families?

It is very workable with children, mainly because the sightseeing bus plus flat wooden boardwalks mean kids can see jaw-dropping lakes without serious hiking, and the water reads as 'magic' to young eyes. With those two things handled, most families find it the highlight of a China trip rather than a hardship.

Can I hike or ride horses beyond the boardwalks?

Inside the park itself, no - to protect the ecosystem the public is kept to the bus line and the marked boardwalks, with no independent trekking off-trail. The good news is that the surrounding region is made for it. If you want active time away from the crowd, we can build a walking or riding day into a Jiuzhaigou and Chengdu itinerary.

Is Jiuzhaigou good for photography?

It is among the best natural-photography subjects in China, if you work around the light. The lakes hold their glassy reflections before about 9am and in flat evening light, so mid-morning is the worst time to shoot; a polariser cuts glare and lets you see down to the drowned trees. Autumn is the money season for colour. Drones are banned across the park and tripods get you shouted past on busy boardwalks, so go early and be patient.

Wider Horizons

Cities & Sights Near Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaigou is most often reached through Chengdu, so it pairs naturally with the pandas there. Huanglong's travertine pools sit just over the ridge, and the old Tibetan town of Songpan or the Kangding loop push the trip into wider Sichuan.
