Tianjin Tours — Concessions & the Haihe

The Five Great Avenues are a grid of streets named after Chinese provinces, laid out during the old concessions and packed with some 2,000 Republican-era villas in British, French, Italian and Spanish styles. It is where deposed Qing dignitaries and warlords built retreats, so nearly every gate has a name attached. A horse-carriage loop or a slow walk under the plane trees takes it in best. Weekends draw wedding photo crews; come early for quiet.

Italian Style Town occupies the old Italian concession, a riverside quarter that changed hands in 1902 and was built out with terracotta villas, arched loggias and wrought-iron balconies. It once housed Beiyang-era diplomats and Chinese intellectuals, and the street plaques now trace who lived where. It sits right by the Haihe, so it pairs naturally with an evening river walk rather than a separate cross-town trip.

Ancient Culture Street is a reconstructed Qing-style market lane that runs to the Tianhou Temple, a Mazu shrine raised in 1326 and among the oldest in northern China, evidence of the days when Tianjin was a canal and sea port. The shops sell the city's three crafts — Yangliuqing prints, Zhang clay figures and sugar moulds. Mornings are crowded with tour groups; late afternoon empties the lane while the temple courtyards stay open. Haggling is expected on the goods.

The Tianjin Eye is a 120-metre observation wheel that straddles the Yongle Bridge and turns directly over the Haihe — one of the few in the world built across a river. Tickets are around ¥70, and the last cars go out near 22:00. Because it sits a metro stop from the old city, it works as a late add-on to a Five Avenues day rather than a destination in itself; weekends mean a queue for the capsules.

Porcelain House is a former French-Concession mansion whose walls, roof and gates are encrusted with antique porcelain — hundreds of vases set neck-down into the brick and millions of shards and Qing plates glazed over the facade. A private collector clad the building from 2010, and the rooms pile porcelain head to toe. Entry is about ¥50. It photographs best in flat morning light; the rooms are small, so crowds bunch quickly at the door and on the stair.

The Haihe is the river that made Tianjin, where the Grand Canal meets the sea route, and its banks are now a continuous promenade of lighted bridges, Republican buildings and the occasional Ferris wheel glow. A walk between the Laohao Bridge and the Tianjin Eye covers the best of it on foot. Boats and the riverfront get busy on summer weekends; weekdays are calm and the breeze off the water is the point.
