Fangsheng Bridge
attractionUpon arriving in Zhujiajiao Water Town, begin your visit at the iconic Fangsheng Bridge, a Yuan Dynasty stone bridge that has long served as a key crossing over the Cao Gang River and a symbol of traditional Jiangnan craftsmanship. Your guide will explain its historical role in trade and local life, along with the symbolic carvings such as dragon heads and lotus motifs representing prosperity and purity. You will also learn about the traditional practice of releasing fish for good fortune. Afterwards, continue along the riverside lanes lined with old houses, teahouses, and small shops, where your guide will introduce the town’s heritage and everyday local life.
Highlights
West Hall
attractionFollowing your visit to North Street, continue to West Hall (Qinglong Temple), a historic religious site in Zhujiajiao originally dating back to the Ming Dynasty and dedicated to Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. The temple is known for its traditional wooden architecture, detailed carvings, and Buddhist-themed murals that reflect centuries of local faith and craftsmanship. Your guide will explain its history, symbolism, and role in community rituals and festivals. You may also stroll through the peaceful surrounding gardens, offering a quiet moment to experience the spiritual atmosphere of the water town.
Highlights
Lunch
mealEnjoy a taste of Zhujiajiao’s local cuisine through its traditional specialties, including braised pork (Jiao Li Jiang Rou) and candied kumquats (Bai Tang Jin Ju). The braised pork is slowly cooked with soy sauce, sugar, and spices, creating a rich, tender dish with a balanced sweet-savory flavor often served with rice or steamed buns. The candied kumquats offer a refreshing contrast, combining sweet and tangy notes and are traditionally associated with good fortune. Your guide will introduce the preparation methods and cultural meanings behind these local flavors, helping you understand the town’s culinary heritage.
Highlights
Deep Lanes and Quiet Alleys
attractionFollowing your culinary experience, continue into the Deep Lanes and Quiet Alleys of Zhujiajiao, a hidden network of narrow pathways away from the main tourist streets. These tranquil lanes are lined with traditional Ming and Qing-style houses, wooden carvings, and greenery, offering a more authentic view of daily life in the water town. Your guide will highlight architectural details, explain local history, and introduce everyday scenes of residents still living and working in these historic homes. You may also observe small artisan workshops and traditional activities that reflect long-standing local customs.
Highlights
Kezhi Garden
attractionAs your Zhujiajiao journey comes to an end, visit Kezhi Garden, a beautifully preserved late Qing Dynasty private garden set along the water. Designed in the style of classical Jiangnan landscape art, it features elegant pavilions, rockeries, winding corridors, and peaceful ponds that reflect traditional Chinese concepts of harmony between nature and architecture. Your guide will explain its history as a former residence of a wealthy local official and highlight symbolic design elements such as rocks representing mountains and water features symbolizing rivers. The visit offers a calm, scenic conclusion to your water town experience.
