816 Underground Nuclear Project
attractionStep into one of the most extraordinary relics of the Cold War—the world's largest man-made cave complex. Decommissioned in 1984 and declassified in 2002, this 20-kilometer subterranean labyrinth was carved by over 60,000 workers over 17 years. Today, you'll explore the 79-meter-high reactor hall, the central control room, the 2001-hole reactor "pot," and the blue-lit water diversion tunnel—all at a constant 18-20°C. The sheer scale of this "underground Great Wall" is staggering.

United Kingdom · Grand China rail journey
“Standing on the Great Wall at sunrise with no other tourists in sight was the highlight of our China tour. The guide arranged a home-cooked lunch in a Beijing hutong with a family who had lived there for generations.”
Italy · Ancient capitals and Hangzhou
“We picked tea leaves with a family whose ancestors farmed Longjing for generations. The tea ceremony that followed was the most memorable moment of our China trip.”
United States · Classic China private tour
“Every guide felt like a friend who happened to know thousands of years of stories. The quiet Forbidden City experience was something we will never forget.”
The tunnels are spacious—main chambers are over 79 meters high—so most visitors don't feel confined. However, the environment is underground with limited natural light. The tour involves walking and some stairs. Not recommended for those with severe claustrophobia or mobility issues. Children aged 6 and above are welcome.
Wear comfortable, non-slip walking shoes—the 816 tunnels have damp surfaces. Bring a light jacket as the 816 tunnels are cool year-round at 18-20°C. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also helpful in the open canyon.
This is an optional add-on—a site-specific theatrical experience inside the real 816 tunnels. Using lighting, sound, and live actors, the performance recreates the Third Front construction era, bringing the hidden industrial history back to life. It's a powerful addition for those interested in the human story behind the engineering.
816 is entirely indoors, so morning activities are unaffected. For the Grand Rift, light rain often adds to the atmospheric beauty. Trails are paved with handrails.. Your guide will monitor conditions and keep you informed.
Strollers are not recommended inside the tunnels due to stairs, uneven surfaces, and narrow passageways at certain sections. The site is also not wheelchair-accessible for the same reasons. For families with young children, a baby carrier is a better option. The Grand Rift scenic area has some paved paths but also includes stairs and cliffside walkways, so stroller use there is also limited.
