Nanshan is one of China most important Buddhist sites, set on a headland where the hills meet the South China Sea. You walk past carved gates and gardens toward the 108-metre Guanyin of the Sea statue, one of the tallest Guanyin figures in the world, standing on a platform over the water. Your guide explains the Golden Jade Buddha, carved from a single block of rare nephrite jade, and the meaning behind the halls and relief carvings. The grounds are open and green, so you can pause for photos, feel the sea breeze, and take in the statues at your own pace rather than rushing through crowded halls.

Around midday your guide brings you to a relaxed local restaurant near Nanshan for a free break to eat at your own pace. Lunch is not included in the price, so you can order fresh Hainan seafood, light vegetarian dishes, or simple noodle plates that suit you; the temple area is well known for good vegetarian cooking. Tianya Haijiao, Yazhou District, Sanya

Tianya Haijiao, the End of the Earth, is Sanya most famous shoreline, once the point where exiled officials and sailors reached the edge of the map. Large weathered boulders rise on the beach, two of them carved with the words that give the site its name. You stroll the sand and rock formations, listen to the legends your guide shares about the lovers stones, and take the classic photos facing the open sea. The sea-front path is wide and breezy, so you can wander at your own pace and enjoy the views.
