FAQ

Common Questions

How much walking is there? What shoes should I wear?

Expect about 3-4 km of walking throughout the day, mostly on flat ground. Qilou Old Street and the markets are all stone or paved paths, and the night market is a pedestrian street. Comfortable flats or sneakers are recommended — high heels are not advised. Haikou is hot and humid, so bring a hat, sunglasses, and a water bottle.

Is Hainanese food spicy? Can you handle dietary restrictions or allergies?

Hainanese cuisine is generally light and fresh, not spicy. But zaopo vinegar soup is sour and spicy — your guide will warn you ahead of time. If you have seafood allergies, are vegetarian, don't eat spicy food, or have other dietary needs, please let us know when booking. Your guide will keep these in mind when recommending stalls and ordering.

Can we buy things at the market? Will the guide help us choose?

Absolutely. Tropical fruits from Dongmen Market and dried seafood or coffee from the dried goods street are popular souvenirs. Your guide will teach you how to tell good quality from bad, give you a sense of fair market prices, and help you communicate and bargain with vendors. No need to worry about carrying things — there's room in the car.

What's the best time to go to the night market? Will it be crowded?

South Gate Night Market starts setting up around 6 PM. We'll arrive around 6:00, and you can hit the most popular stalls before the biggest crowds arrive, then keep eating as you wander. Weekends and holidays are busier, but there are also more stalls — you rarely wait very long.

Is this tour suitable for kids and seniors? Will it be too tiring?

The itinerary is mostly flat walking at a relaxed pace, with plenty of places to sit down and rest in both the markets and night market. Very young babies might find the night market crowded and warm, so bringing a stroller is recommended. Your guide adjusts the walking speed and rest frequency flexibly based on the group that day.
